Warragul Pump Station Shoring Solution
THE CHALLENGE
As part of the Gippsland Water $13 million Warragul Sewer Upgrade an 8m deep pump station was required to be constructed within soft clays and a high-water table.
The location of the structure was close to the site entry road which meant that this left no room for benching and an appropriate positive shoring system was required. The excavation size needed to be 6m x 6m to fit the permanent works structure and a bench would have made this 18m x 18m.
OUR SOLUTION
The customer wanted a system that was easy to self-perform and had ruled out traditional high strength shoring boxes due to anticipated problems installing and extracting them at depth in the heavy wet ground and a slide rail system couldn’t take the loading at the clear opening required. In order to provide a self-performing solution, Mabey’s Engineering team came up with a sheet and frame solution that could take the heavy loads, eliminate the ground water problem and would be extractable at the end of the 8 week project duration.
The shoring comprised of a 2.5m local bench, 6m long L603 sheet piles and three Super Shaftbrace support beams. The sheets where embedded in a sufficient distance using our Mabey EMV 450 after pre-drilling was performed. The customer also made use of Mabey’s new market leading edge protection and extendable ladder access platform. Along with the davit arm, this was a safe solution for this project
THE RESULT
Mabey’s Engineering expertise successfully aligned this project delivery with customer expectation.
